Babies born using three people's DNA to prevent genetic diseases

On 10 May 2023 Britain's fertility regulator confirmed births of the UK's first babies created using an experimental technique combining DNA from three people, an effort to prevent the children from inheriting rare genetic diseases.

In 2015, the UK was the first country to adopt legislation regulating methods to help prevent women with faulty mitochondria from passing defects on to their babies.  Genetic defects can result in muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, heart problems and intellectual disabilities.

The procedure has its critics who say there is a need for close monitoring of children born using the technique.
