Beware the illiberalism marching back into history

post-image

"On the outside, the triumph of liberalism so richly celebrated during the 1990s faces severe challenges, exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. The liberal economic model –which has depended on sound domestic finance, encouragement of enterprise and entrepreneurship in competitive markets, free trade and rising living standards – has been brought to a grinding halt by the pandemic.

It’s hardly surprising, but the representatives of countries that don’t embrace the liberal consensus, such as China, are now proclaiming that their model of governance is superior to the liberal democratic model.
