Rotating Pool Table/Dining Room Table

post-image

Tables are some of the most resource and cost consuming pieces of furniture, because of the sizes of pieces used, and space that is required for a table. I have designed a solution to this problem by creating a new way of combining a pool table and dining room table. Being made almost entirely of timber, pool tables and dining room tables consume large amounts of resources to create. But by combining the two, it allows these amounts to be halved.

A novel idea that looks like fun! This related idea could be helpful.

Not only would this help in the resources department but I think just having this as opposed to a dining and a pool table would save a lot of space in the home, great idea!

This is such a great idea. I think there's also an element of family/household entertainment that's encouraged here. In an era where many people have turned homes into work or educational environments - it's a great way to get people to switch off and enjoy one another's company.

i like this idea, I am wondering how the preferred height and space for knee room and eating from compares to playing height of a pool table.  It would be important that it is comfortable to dine at.

Perhaps make vertical grooves in the legs to contain those portable pool cues that you can screw together, so at first it looks like decorative legs but is actually storage.

Hi Jack M,

After a weekend spent quilting on my dining table I am now thinking about how much I would love a similar product but rotating into a sewing centre with half of it as a measuring and cutting board, inbuilt power for a sewing machine and iron and a quarter of it set up with  woolen mat for ironing while at the table.  You have certainly hit on something by noticing how space and cost and function intense a dining table can be and how a dual purpose could be good.  I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Hi there Jack hoping you are well and you have managed to get some well earned down time.

Your project looks amazing and I hope that being part of the UpRising initiative has been rewarding and meaningful for you.

As we wrap up the trial phase of the UpRising initiative and head towards the awards night in November I have a few quick questions.  If you could answer these in a comment below that would be so great. We want to understand how UpRising assisted you and also help us best prepare for next year's cohort of designers.

1.      What were two interesting things that you experienced or found as a result of being part of the UpRising?

2.      How did UpRising help you with your project?

3.      What would you like to do with your project and what would help you get there?

4.      How did seeing other UpRising projects affect your designing and learning experience?

5.      What would you like to see added to the UpRising initiative to better help next year's students?

One last thing, can you add in a ‘Start to Finish’ photo of your project? Stitch a photo of early drawing or prototype next to an image of your finished product and update your post with this image.

Congratulations once again and looking forward to seeing you in November. You have done an amazing job and we are very proud of the 2021 cohort.

See you soon

Hi R Hainsworth

To answer your questions, the two most interesting things that I experienced, whilst being part of UpRising, was the feedback that was given by the community to improve my design, and the ability to see others’ posts and designs. By being able to view these products, the website gave me the insight I needed in order to see the creativity of others. UpRising helped me with my project by the community giving ideas which I can use to improve any future designs. The communication between people inspired me to enhance my creative skills and think outside the box when coming up with any new possibilities for custom designs. For the future of this project, I would hopefully like to create and sell products similar to this, due to the overwhelming positive feedback I have received. However, the main hindrance to this is the cost of resources as this combined with the cost of labour is too high to be sold in order to make a profit. So therefore, extensive research would need to be made, to lower the cost of resources, as well as funding for personal woodworking equipment to decrease the time necessary to complete the project (therefore decreasing the cost of the table). Something that would immensely benefit the UpRising initiative in the future would be a ‘reply button’ for any comments left on posts, as although small, the change would allow for deeper conversations between individuals to take place.

This is a photo of the final product, alongside my CAD drawings

Congratulations on all of your hard work this year and for being the first year 12 design students to be part of The UpRising.  The 8 judges have been busy going through all the major design projects to decide which projects should be awarded hundreds of dollars in seed funding and mentoring, to take their project to the next level. The judges have used a points system, 3 points for the project they felt was the most impressive, 2 points for a second outstanding project and 1 point for a project that really resonated with them. Three projects will be awarded Seed funding and mentoring

  • First Place $1000 Seed funding

  • Second place 750

  • Third place 500

The winners will be assisted with the continued development of their project next year by the very cool company Nectir

We are holding an Awards night to announce the winners and we would love to have you all there. It’s online so you can join in from wherever you are. 6pm - 7pm Thursday evening 9th December.
