As Alexander Downer points out in today’s AFR, the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic is placing strain on government finances and could lead to a severely distressed economy. There will be temptation to drift into supporting political leaders who offer an easy way out of the problem - no matter how implausible.

To protect our democratic way of life the various governments in Australia’s Federation need to be cautious about the extent of their autocratic decision making and seek ways of better engaging the public in the tough decisions that must be made.
